A Technical Advisory Toolkit for Lead Service Lines

By Marc Santos, Denise Schmidt, Maureen Cunningham, and Erica Galante-Johnson

Water utilities are looking for the latest and greatest resources to help them manage their lead service line (LSL) programs, both for inventory activities and actual LSL replacements. As part of EPIC’s ongoing efforts to elevate lessons-learned and provide technical assistance to water utilities across the country, our team has been in direct communication with utilities already in the trenches replacing LSLs and galvanized service lines. As these utilities replace service lines, they are finding numerous challenges and opportunities for improvement, including areas related to customer engagement, contracting, workforce development, and construction.

To help the overall water community realize cost efficiencies, we are developing a repository of solutions. As an initial step, EPIC has created the Technical Advisory Toolkit for Lead Service Lines - available for free, and for everyone. This toolkit is an ongoing project, and will be updated as new case studies and solutions become available.

Achieving “lead free water” can be expedited by a collaborative and open sharing of solutions for LSL replacements.  If you or your organization are aware of a good resource, success story, or technology solution that you believe would benefit others in the water sector, please reach out to our team directly at contactwater@policyinnovation.org, so we can add it to the Lead Service Line Toolkit.
